ABOUT COSELL

The Consortium of SouthEastern Law Libraries (COSELL) is open to academic law libraries in the southeastern United States.

COSELL began in 1986-87 when a group of academic law librarians in the Southeastern Chapter of the American Association of Law Libraries met to discuss issues and concerns relevant to academic law librarians. COSELL is now a thriving consortium, which has tax-exempt status and is incorporated under the laws of the State of Florida. In 1996 the COSELL membership adopted a "Strategic Plan," which details further cooperative efforts among the COSELL law libraries.

Some of the benefits of COSELL membership include:

  • Free photocopy and fax service for COSELL member libraries to each other;
  • Exchange of law library newsletters among COSELL members;
  • Discount "primary vendors" purchasing agreement with Yankee Book Peddler;
  • Participation (if appropriate) in a CIS cataloging services price reduction plan for COSELL member law libraries;
  • COSELL meetings at the SEAALL Annual Meeting, including roundtable discussions for Public Service Librarians, Technical Service Librarians, and Computer Services Librarians;
  • Loaning of videotapes to each other;
  • Funding opportunities for cooperative special projects (approved recently); and
  • Sharing information through the COSELL discussion list.

Other cooperative efforts over the past decade include:

1. An agreement with the University of Georgia Law Library to maintain and make available a "master" collection of superseded states codes;

2. The development of a comprehensive collection of Fourth Circuit of Appeals records and briefs at the University of North Carolina;

3. An award from the Federal Government to place telefacsimile equipment in all COSELL law libraries;

4. Several "clearinghouses" for library documents and policies, including annual reports and five-year plans at William & Mary, photographs of renovations or newly built libraries at West Virginia; lists of available pathfinders from member libraries at William & Mary; and collection development policies and user surveys at the University of Tennessee.
